Pre-development concept devlog:

TITLE:

Wandering Witch

Concept Statement:

Hundreds of meters underground, solve puzzles, defeat enemies which swarm you from all sides in an abandoned mining canary, using only your potions, scientific knowledge and wit to discover the mysteries of the cave in, and the fate which has befallen the miners. You play as Tilly Tinkerly; a no good, untalented, disowned witch (frankly it’s a stretch to even call her one), with no ability to cast her own spells nor fight back, she is only able to use science, potions and her intelligence to outsmart the monsters that lurk in the old mining canary.

GENRE:

Fantasy, Action, RPG

Concept creation process:

Influences include games such as Pocket Mirror ~ GoldenerTraum, Little Goodie Two Shoes, and Paper Lily – Chapter 1. Both the artistic style and gameplay concepts are inspired by these games, all of which being puzzle games, with anime inspired art, another key inspiration would be The Coffin of Andy and Leyley, for the sprites and overworld art style, as I feel it would suit my skillset better, since I have more limited experience with pixel art creation.

Audience and competitive analysis:

The game is aimed at people who love puzzles which will make them think of creative ways to solve problems. The game will stand out from the crowd with its use of fantastical art, and unique writing, with narration from the perspective of the likeable, entertaining and charming main character; Tilly Tinkerly.

GAME TREATMENT AND CONCEPT ART:

The game is set in a slightly gothic inspired fantasy world; however, the majority of the game will take place in dim cave (simply due to limited scope and environment creation). Mechanics primarily will focus on puzzle solving to further the exploration; however the player will have access to Tilly’s cauldron and her recipes for useful potions, which she can use to help defend herself such as by blinding enemies to make a quick escape, or healing herself after getting hit.

POST PROJECT REVIEW:

I will let what little I have done here to speak for itself.

These are the recourses I used to learn about how to create the grid-based movement system I implemented:
